WORLD LIVER DAY
World liver day is observed on every 19 April, to spread awareness about liver related disease. The liver is the second largest and the most complex organ in the body, with the exception of the brain. It is a key player in your body’s digestive system. Everything you eat or drink, including medicine, passes through the liver. You cannot survive without liver. It is an organ which can be easily damaged if you don’t take good care of it.
WHY IS LIVER IMPORTANT?
- Fights infections and illness
- Regulates blood sugar
- Removes toxic substances from the body
- Controls cholesterol levels
- Helps blood to clot
- Makes many of the body’s essential proteins
- Releases bile and aids in digestion
- Responsible for manufacturing cholesterol and triglycerides
- Breaks down medications and drugs, including alcohol
- Breaks down insulin and other hormones in the body
According to WHO, liver diseases are the 10th most common cause of death in India.
CAUSES OF LIVER DISEASE
- Liver disease can be inherited or genetic
- Unhealthy lifestyle and eating patterns
- Viruses such as hepatitis A, B and C can damage the liver
- Increased consumption of alcoholic drinks along with high cholesterol-inducing junk foods
- Overweight, Marked Obesity and Type 2 diabetes

Eat healthy and balanced diet and exercise regularly to keep your liver healthy.
SYMPTOMS
Liver disease doesn't usually cause any obvious signs or symptoms until it is fairly advanced and the liver is damaged.
- Jaundice
- Sudden weight loss
- A decrease in appetite
- Nausea and vomiting
- General weakness and/or fatigue
- Pain occurring in the upper abdomen on the right side or near the right shoulder blade
- Enlarged liver
- Enlarged spleen
- Abdominal swelling
TIPS FOR LIVER CLEANSING
- Eat garlic, grapefruit, carrot, green leafy vegetables, apple and walnuts
- Use olive oil
- Take lemon and lime juice and green tea
- Add cruciferous vegetables (Cabbage, Broccoli and Cauliflower).
- Use turmeric in food
LIVER DISEASE: TIPS FOR PREVENTION
- Maintain a healthy weight: This can help in preventing development of fatty liver and can help in maintaining liver health. Make sure you eat healthy foods, sleep well, take less stress and exercise regularly.
- Get vaccinated: Getting hepatitis A and B vaccines is important for preventing liver disease.
- Say NO to Alcohol, Smoking and Drugs: Alcohol, Smoking and Drugs can damage or destroy liver cells. Even don’t be target of passive smoking.
- Stay in clean environments: As mentioned above, exposure to harmful toxins can be harmful for your liver. Ensure proper ventilation in your room; wear a mask when spraying insecticides, paint or fungicides.
- Take care with toxic chemicals: Chemicals such as aerosol and cleaning products and insecticides, produces toxic substances that can injure liver cells.
CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR before starting any medication: When medicines are taken incorrectly or in wrong combination, then liver can be damaged easily.
